A group of eight young people from Lisbellaw Youth Club have recently completed an OCN course in Peer Leadership, facilitated by the Western Education and Library Board’s (WELB) Youth Service.
The course was offered to senior members of the youth club, aged 15-18 years old, with the aim of equipping the young people with the knowledge and skills to form and operate a senior member’s youth club management committee.
The course was suggested by senior members who sought more active roles in their club including, leadership and decision making. The course provided them with the theory and practical skills to become effective leaders amongst their peers. The young people met every Friday evening for 12 weeks and attended a one night residential at WELB Corrick Outdoor Education Centre, Plumbridge.
Rachel Gilmore, WELB Youth Worker, Fermanagh, said: “The young people showed a great eagerness and commitment to learning and I am delighted that they have achieved this accredited certificate. The peer leaders are taking a very active role in their youth club and community and are potentially the next generation of community youth workers.”
Following the training, the young people are now working with the club’s adult management committee on the youth club and summer programmes and a number of fundraising activities.
The WELB Youth Service would like to congratulate these young people for achieving an OCN certificate in Peer Leadership and for taking a positive role in their community. If any young person or youth organisation/club would like more information on accredited/non- accredited courses on offer through the WELB Youth Service they should contact Lakeland Youth Centre on 028 6632 6932.
