Pupil Participation

PUPIL PARTICIPATION INCLUDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOL COUNCIL

"The development of a culture where the views of children and young people are routinely sought in matters which impact on their lives" is an expressed aim of government (Our Children and Young People-Our Pledge), a ten-year strategy for children and young people (OFMDFM 2006) which is consistent with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Pupil Personal Development Services Team actively encourages real and meaningful participation of all pupils in influencing decisions which affect them, including the practices and policies that operate within their schools. Recent legislation requires schools to consult with pupils and other key stakeholders, in relation to the development of their Positive Behaviour and Anti-Bullying Policies, in order to develop policies, procedures which will gain acceptance in practice.

Class and school Councils give pupils a voice as partners in the processes of school improvement and self evaluation, helping schools to become more effective learning environments. The Pupil Personal development Services Team will assist schools in developing skills and practices which children's views to be obtained at all stages with mechanisms in place to facilitate children and young people becoming active participants in their school communities.

The PPDS team can provide advice and support through training for pupils and staff including training for lead staff in the school community and whole school staff training, training for children and young people equipping them with appropriate skills, understanding and emotional literacy in expressing their views appropriately within their class, during circle time, during consultation or feedback exercises or at formal meetings of class or school councils. During workshops with pupils who have key roles in class and school councils we equip them with the skills necessary to effectively participate, represent and present to decision makers.
