Child Employment Permits

Child Employment Permits

The Education Authority Western Region issues employment permits in respect of children of compulsory school age who propose to engage in part-time employment and who live in its area.

As required by law [The Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1995, Part X11, articles 135/6 & The Employment of Children Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996, amended 2006)], all employers of children of compulsory school age must apply for a permit to the Education Authority Western Region before the proposed starting date of the child.  The application must include the written consent from the parent/carer of the child.

N.B. It is unlawful for any child under the age of thirteen to be employed.

Completed application forms are assessed by a Designated Officer for Child Protection in CPSSS who will ensure that all legal and regulatory conditions are met.  A recommendation for approval is then made to the Chief Executive of the Education Authority Western Region who if satisfied will sign and issue the employment permit.  If a permit is not issued the proposed employment is unlawful and cannot proceed.

Application forms and regulations are available from CPSSS - Tel: 028 8241 1480 or by clicking on the links below:
